I admire how New Canaan as a community has discouraged retail establishments that call themselves “Smoke Shops” and “CBD Stores”. In practice, in cities like Norwalk where illegal THC product is being sold at dozens of stores, a Smoke Shop or CBD Store has the incentive to addict its clientele to generate repeat profits. And the younger the consumer, the better.
The recent arrest of a 21 year old Norwalk Smoke Shop owner (article here), demonstrates the threat to public health of these retailers.
In New Canaan, a smoke shop on South Avenue closed its doors in early 2023 after being raided the state Department of Consumer Protection.
More recently, I was strolling on Elm Street and saw that “Your CBD Store” has also left town. Good riddance, I say, after hearing anecdotes of how the retailer was unethically selling THC-laden “CBD” products. See our blogposts here, here, here, and here.
More good news: New Canaan as a town has banned retail state-licensed cannabis establishments from opening their doors in our town. This is a great idea, given the potency of the THC products being sold in both the legal and illegal marketplace. Remember, the THC products of today cause mental health-related risks that just wasn’t present in your grandparents’ Woodstock weed.
Thanks again, New Canaan. You are a great community, and we are grateful to be part of it.
