Ben Tuff in New Canaan

Most good things in life a ephemeral–they last for a period of time and then disappear. Luckily, the memories can remain.

I think of that as we plan for Ben Tuff’s visit to New Canaan on August 29, 2024. He will share his story of recovery to all who will listen. His story is an educational one, as it covers a number of phases or concepts, including family impact, shame, contemplative stage, action, and pathway to recovery.

At the Vigil, Ben will share about his key recovery pathway–long distance swimming. As I learned in his excellent documentary film, Swim Tuff, his ultra swims can last 12 hours or more. After viewing the movie, I realize how courageous Ben and his family members were, agreeing to be in the spotlight and out of the shadows. . (CLICK HERE to view this amazing movie.)

At NCPSG’s 8th Annual Awareness Vigil on August 29, Ben will share his experiences, which will answer questions like: 1) is addiction a disease you inherited? 2) do you have a co-occurring mental health challenge? 3) who among family and friends support you, and how important is that?

Following the 2023 release of the Swim Tuff film, two amazing events took place. First, his twin brother Chris embraced recovery from addiction just like Ben. Additionally, his sister Sarah also sought treatment and is now in long-term recovery. In other words, Ben’s energy and enthusiasm were contagious!

Nothing is guaranteed in the addiction treatment and recovery world, and there is no cure. However, it is heartwarming to listen to a touching recovery success story, especially in-person. I hope you can hear Ben at our August Vigil, and become as impressed by Ben as I am.
