How Can Al-Anon Help Me?
Our personal situations may be different, but we share as equals because of what we have in common: our lives have been affected by another person’s drinking. Al-Anon is a mutual support group.

We can find understanding and support when we share our common experience with each other. Some of us are here because a spouse or partner has struggled with alcoholism. For others, the problem drinker is a parent, child, or grandchild. Sometimes a brother, a sister, or some other friend or relative brings us to Al-Anon. Many of us have had more than one alcoholic family member or friend.

Alcoholism has similar effects on us all, even though our relationships to the alcoholic may be different. Many newcomers are most interested in hearing about situations and relationships that are similar to their own. Over time, however, we come to understand that we can benefit from hearing how the Al-Anon principles worked in many different circumstances.

AA meetings vary in format and size. There are discussion meetings, speaker meetings, meetings which center around reading AA literature, and some meetings are combinations of these formats.

At any AA meeting, alcoholics share from their own experience about what their lives were like when they were drinking, what actions they have taken to recover from active alcoholism, and what their lives are like today.

AA does not keep any membership records. You do not have to reveal anything about yourself when you attend a meeting. Attending an AA meeting does not obligate you to anything; you are welcome to make your own decision about whether to come back.

Dr. Beth Epstein received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut and is a licensed psychologist in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.  She is an expert in the use of CBT and other evidence-based strategies in psychotherapy.  In addition to years of experience treating a range of disorders, Dr. Epstein has a strong specialty in assessment and treatment of Addiction. She is also a nationally recognized National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant-funded psychotherapy researcher developing CBT treatments for addiction and related problems (depression, anxiety, family distress).

Dr. Epstein has worked with patients struggling with depression, sadness, anxiety, stress, alcohol or drugs, gambling, bipolar disorders, marital problems, unsatisfying relationship patterns, emotion regulation, challenges related to life-transitions (divorce, separation, illness, grief, relocation), low self-esteem, perfectionism, illness or substance use of a loved one, and adult ADHD.  She works with each patient as a team to understand and resolve symptoms, unwanted habits, and unhealthy patterns as well as to identify strengths and resources so that patients can identify and attain their life goals.  She is experienced in Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Schema Therapy, and elements of mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies (ACT and DBT).  She provides individual, couple, family, and group therapies.

Dr. Epstein has trained and supervised over 100 clinical psychology graduate students, and has taught graduate level courses on Adult Psychopathology; Lifespan Development; Cognitive Behavioral Assessment and Treatment; Assessment and Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders. Professional association memberships include the American Psychological Association, the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and the Research Society on Alcoholism.

I began my career at Family Centers in Greenwich and Darien, CT, while also interning at Arms Acres in the Bronx, NY providing substance abuse prevention and counseling for children in residential foster care. From 2008 through 2020 I was the addiction and trauma specialist for The Center for Hope and Renewal in Greenwich, CT providing counseling to children, adolescents and families in Fairfield and Westchester counties. I started Hand in Hand Counseling in 2021.

I grew up in New York City, attended Phillips Academy (Andover), Hollins University, and earned my Masters in Social Work at NYU. I am an avid and competitive athlete and mother to two grown children.

Because people are experts of their own internal experiences, my role is one of empathic co-investigator to help identify maladaptive thinking and behaviors and, subsequently, to facilitate change in my patients. Having served as senior vice president at Liberation Programs from 1996 to 2006, Hamilton brings an intimate knowledge of the agency, one of Fairfield County’s top behavioral health organizations.

In addition to his prior service at Liberation, Hamilton was the CEO of Bridgeport’s Recovery Network of Programs (RNP) for a decade. There, he was able to triple the size of the agency, exponentially increasing its community impact.

In my view, individual work is the cornerstone of treatment—even in relationship/couples’ counseling, we will sometimes split into individual sessions to help each of you deepen in personal development.

In parent coaching, working with or without your partner and child can open new areas of understanding and help you gain additional behavioral skills. And, working one-on-one to intercept and rewire unwanted neural patterns is essential when learning to manage anxiety and/or depression.
