Parents with loved ones struggling with mental health and addiction disorders face tremendous financial challenges, despite the mental health insurance parity laws that have been passed at both the state and national level. Insurance coverage varies by insurer, the specific plan, and the state. The appeals process for overturning denied claims differs as well. There are several organizations who for a fee will help families navigate the insurance claims maze, including Denials Management run by Mary Covington, Bridgeway Billing, SJ Health Insurance Advocates, and the Mental Health & Autism Insurance Project. In addition, Connecticut’s Office of the Healthcare Advocate is there to help you–free of charge. Two of our parents have found this office helpful in successfully appealing denied claims. To contact the office, call (866) 466-4446 or email Healthcare.advocate@ct.gov.
